MARTIN’S REST DAY SECRETS

@feigum

Rest days for me are sacred. Not only for my recovery, but also to spend more time with friends and family. I have two rest days a week, 1 active rest day and one completely off.

I typically get up early (6:30am), and depending on whether it is an active rest day or not, I will go for a 60-90 minute swimming session. Then I’ll grab a coffee and breakfast and do some work for a couple of hours. Then beach!

With more time on hand on my rest days, I love exploring the many beaches of Bali on my days off. We always bring beach toys to play volleyball, spikeball or throw around a frisbee. Occasionally, I might check out some of the beautiful waterfalls as well. My favourite so far is Aling-Aling.

Another big thing on my day off, is eating. I struggle getting enough calories in on my training days (as I train 5 hours), so with more time I make sure to eat more than normal (4000 calories or more)! Might sound like a lot and I can confirm it is also a LOT!

BEER BUZZ.

The beer scene is naturally quite vibrant on the island. But if you prefer to pass on the Bintang for a craftier concoctions, you can get your fillings too. Everybody knows Black Sand Brewery so obviously we can’t not mention it as their selection of unfiltered and unpasteurized brews are so far unrivalled in Canggu area, so please stay for their kolsch and saison; the Seminyak based Hoi Polloi Craft Beer Garden serves the famous Little Creatures Brewery from Aussie and they are based in Seminyak but now you can also find the brand at Finns Rec meanwhile the new kid on the scene, Kura-Kura brews their smooth lager (and ale) in their own brewery in Plaga. They don’t have their own joint for now but you can order via their website or IG page.

FINE WINE.

For the sommelier-at-heart, you can actually find good local wine on the island. Hatten Wines, founded by Ida Bagus Rai Budarsa, paved the way since the 90s by utilizing grapes from their local vineyards in the north of Bali as well as imported ones for the more premium collection, such as their award winning Alexandria Sababay Winery is a premium, locally produced brand that has its own winery in Gianyar, with highlights include their port style Masceti wine as well as the fruity Moscarosa sweet sparkling wine, and they’ve also branched out to spirits-making with their Saba Grappa (Italian brandy) craft spirit line made from fresh pressed grapes; and for the spiced wine variety, Bali Wein, is another local venture worth a sip with wines made from local fruits and spices like soursop, salak, cashews, and ginger.

BREAKING BREAD.

Gotta love the loaves and here the options are bountiful. Starting with Starter Lab, a sourdough specialist perfected by master bakers Emerson Manibo from New York who has given us delectable offerings like the seeded wheat, Danish rye, and the best sellers, rosemary, lemon, and sea salt sourdough, plus a Baker’s Choice that never fails to surprise; and if you’re a curious baker do not miss their workshops. Another favorite artisanal sourdough mecca is Farine that specializes in San Franscisco style sourdoughs, as well as multigrain ryes and bagels. Coffee & Oven fresh European style loaves (try the pumpernickel) goes down well with their signature island espresso, while the island’s long running player, Monsieur Spoon, still reigns supreme in our sweetest memories for their croissants.

SO SMOOTH.

On a hot day, a bowl of nutrientdense smoothie is an excellent energy booster. Nalu Bowls is the smoothie shack to be at in Canggu with the peanut butter & raspberry bowl a classic treat Green Guru’s acai and granola bowl is a fan favorite, and here they make their own granola and peanut butter; Shady Shack serves giant, family-friendly smoothie bowls such as the Lost Paradise with dragon fruit and pineapple; Cafe Organic Bondi Bowl is pure delight with coconut, banana, blueberry, and mango, with the ingredients coming from their own organic farm; the plant-based Peloton mix up their smoothies with a dash of greens; while the hip Crate also offers great smoothie options, including their Hipstar with coconuts and roasted cashew.
