WHAT WOULD BE MY FAVORITE LIFT AND WHY?

I’d say the Back Squat. Considering it’s probably the most efficient way to help with knee joint, ankle mobility, foot coordination/ balance and to build strength in the legs, it also builds faster muscle than any movement or exercise done, without wasting too much time. If done correctly, it can even be a great core exercise as well!

FAVOURITE AUXILIARY WORK?

Klokov Press. I do them 3-4 times per week usually as a warm up but can be used as an accessory. I usually like to do them in sets of 3-4 for about 5 reps per set at a decent weight that’s moveable without failing. It has helped me tremendously with shoulder mobility, shoulder strength and stabilizing snatch turnovers, balance and jerks.

TIPS I WOULD CONSIDER WHEN PERFORMING THIS?

If you’re somewhat a beginner or haven’t done this type of exercise before it’s going to feel quite hard, even with a 20 / 15kg barbell. But take your time and try not to rest too much when completing each set.

Don’t use shoes and go barefoot. One of the most common problems I find when people lift weights is that the heels tend to raise, this is usually due to a lack of ankle mobility. You want to try and get as much mobility flexion in your ankle as possible to dominate your bottom squat position before moving to any elevated heeled shoe (or weightlifting shoes). So when you squat barefoot you’re basically flexing more ankle tension, stretching the ligament and giving you more mobility while you’re training/working out. For me, I find it easier. It feels lighter, plus you have more foot grip and coordination to work with, you can really feel the ground and work out whatever errors that are at play.

WHY DO I LOVE WANDERLUST?

What’s not to love about Wanderlust! It’s a sanctuary for people to better themselves physically and mentally. It has the power to really change the way people thrive, think and feel. I love it personally because it’s been somewhat a home of mine for the past 4 years, being able to have an opportunity to lift weights at the #1 Best and Largest box in Asia is incredible, and I’m thankful everyday to have that chance!
